Macrobiotics and Breast Cancer Recovery

One morning Lori Wyman discovered a startling lump on her breast. After seeing her doctor and many tests and procedures later, it was confirmed. Lori was diagnosed with breast cancer. The doctors recommend chemo, radiation and a double mastectomy. But Lori had other plans. She remembered Dirk Benedict's inspiring book Confessions of a Kamikazee Cowboy, where he shares his experience recovering from prostate cancer with Macrobiotics. She enrolled in the Kushi Institute's Way to Health Program and worked with a counselor to drop weight and ditch the cancer. Meg Wolff's story is a little different, she followed here doctors' advice and went through with the conventional procedures. At age 41 Meg was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a mastectomy, chemo and radiation the doctors left her with no hope, but Meg was determined to live and would do whatever it took. After hearing many accounts of woman who successfully recovered through the Macrobiotic Diet. There was no turning back. Meg has been enjoying whole grains, beans and veggies ever since. At age 37 Gayle Stolove discovered a lump on her breast. Her grandmother died of breast cancer at a young age so Gayle instinctively knew. Consumed by fear, she lived in denial for two years. When she could no longer face seeing the skin around the lump on her breast start to pucker and wrinkle anymore, she went to see a surgeon. She was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer and opted for a lumpectomy and axillary lymph node dissection. The surgery revealed more bad news and the doctors gave her 6 months to a year to live. During chemo and radiation Gayle embraced a Macrobiotic diet and way of life, inspired by some people who healed themselves of cancers. She consumed a diet of whole foods. Josephine Floyd's story started with her mother, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 65. Josephine was later diagnosed at age 35. After dealing with doctors and her mother's experience, she knew that was not the path she would take for her own diagnosis. She was convinced that her diet was the cause. She gave up dairy and chicken. She started purchasing organic products and reading food labels. She enrolled in our MINI Way to Health Program and learned how diet and lifestyle choices influenced her health. She learned about the antioxidant properties of a planted based diet.
